The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that this year's strand of flu is the worst and most widespread researchers have seen in the U.S. in years. Because of this, there is a national shortage of flu tests. The CDC is asking healthcare providers to use clinical assessment to diagnose influenza in place of laboratory confirmation to begin antiviral therapy. Antiviral treatment is recommended as early as possible for patients hospitalized with confirmed or suspected influenza, with severe complicated or progressive illnesses or at high risk of influenza complications.
